Taqueria Guadalajara Serving Up Authenticity

January 18, 2023

This might not be news, but there’s a new Mexican restaurant in Ballston Spa that deserves recognition. I’m talking about Taqueria Guadalajara, located at 2007 Doubleday Ave, Ballston Spa, NY. If you recognize that address, it might be because of my love affair with Alaturco Restaurant, which once occupied the space (now reopened in a new location – but that story is for another day!)

I’ve had my eyes on Taqueria Guadalajara for a while but didn’t make it in to eat until last weekend. Now I’m disappointed in myself for waiting so long. Upon walking in the front door, on the left are a few tables along with shelves of edible products to purchase. The “main” dining area is to the right, with 5-6 tables total in the space. You can tell right away that it’s a family business and that at this point in their operations (aka over a year in), they are a well-oiled machine.

Something I love about going out to eat with friends (aside from the company, of course) is getting to take pictures of several dishes. And that is exactly what I did during this visit:

Al Pastor Tacos & Pollo Tacos
Al Pastor Enchiladas
Shrimp Fajitas

While I didn’t try the others, I did order the shrimp fajitas for myself, and boy was I impressed. The peppers and onions were slightly charred but still had a bite to them, and the shrimp was seasoned and cooked to perfection. It was also huge, and I took 60% home with me.

We saw the cheesecake burrito on the menu and couldn’t pass up the chance to try it, so for dessert we ordered one of those and some churros.

Cheesecake Burrito
Churros

The cheesecake burrito was definitely interesting, but was basically a piece of cheesecake rolled in a tortilla and deep fried. I suppose that’s pretty self-explanatory based on the name, but we had to see it for ourselves. Personally, I thought the burrito was fine, but the real star of the show was the churros. I’m a sucker for churros, even since I was a small child, and would beg for one when we’d walk through BJ’s Wholesale Club as a family (IYKYK.)

Some things to note about the restaurant:

  • The chips and salsa are set on the table right after you sit down (and the salsa has a great kick to it)
  • Water is served in bottles
  • They JUST got their liquor license on 1/13 but weren’t yet serving alcohol when I was there

I’m so thrilled to have another great restaurant in Ballston Spa. It’s really becoming a great destination for various ethnic cuisines, including Mexican, Mediterranean, Indian, and American.

FYI it feels good to be back and write, so expect more of this (and me!) in 2023 🙂
