Feeling Like a Local at The Local

November 5, 2012

For the past few days I’ve been doing my best to try and eat healthier. I know I’ve said it before, but this time I’ve finally faced the fact that because of my excessive eating and passion for food, I’ve gained some weight. And it’s more than I would have liked to. So with that said, I’ve made a promise to myself to make better decisions while I’m dining out. Hopefully it lasts this time around and I don’t get distracted by fried chicken at Hattie’s or my never ending love for bacon.

The Local is a great spot that is always busy, regardless of when you decide to go. Over in the art district of Saratoga on Beekman Street, it’s a smaller restaurant with a huge bar and a ton of great craft beer selections. As you can see, they care about their beverages, which I would assume is why they came up with their logo:

I managed to resist a beer, even though it was Friday and I totally would have loved one. When it came to ordering from the menu, this is where I found my biggest challenge. The Local has a lot of great comfort meals, including Irish favorites like shepherd’s pie, fish n’ chips and bangers and mash. Out of those three, the fish n’ chips at The Local are amazing. They are actually the best I’ve had in Saratoga, so that’s saying something. If you love a good fish n’ chips and aren’t trying to be healthy like me, you should definitely try them here.

But alas, I searched the menu for another option that would fit my needs. I decided to order the “veggie burger”, which consists of grilled eggplant, roasted red peppers and fresh mozzarella with a side of balsamic vinaigrette:

The burger comes with a heaping pile of fresh cut french fries which taste fresh and flavorful, especially with a little malt vinegar sprinkled on top. YUM. The burger itself is really more like two round slices of grilled eggplant on top of each other with melted mozzarella and roasted red peppers to top it off. The actual name can be confusing, especially since it doesn’t come in patty form and isn’t really a burger but more of a sandwich. This sandwich has been a favorite of mine since day one, so I knew I couldn’t go wrong ordering it. If you like eggplant and roasted red peppers, this sandwich is a good choice. The great thing about it is that you don’t feel overly stuffed if you finish the whole thing because it’s not huge, but it’s big enough.

If you’re going to the local, I’d suggest to not do what I did. Go in, get a beer or five and enjoy the fish n’ chips, in all of its goodness. I will go back there soon, and you better believe I’ll be doing that, but hopefully a couple sizes smaller! Until then…
